No major competition markets competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. But through the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. It’s one where most of the league appear to be sufficient.

NFC Standings Definition

In the NFC, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams along with the Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most well-rounded squads in football, and achieved blowout wins during Sunday's action. The 6-2 Eagles notwithstanding their difficulties maintain one of the most talented rosters in the league, similar to the Packers (5-2-1). Detroit as well (six and three), with their fluctuating form in trench play and navigating coaching drama, have demonstrated they can defeat good teams. For all five, you can still easily put together a route to the final game.

Muddled AFC Picture

Over in the AFC, the playoff picture is a jumbled mess. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. No Chiefs presence. Not the Bills. Not the Ravens or Bengals. Historically strong franchises, featuring premier quarterback talent, possess either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.

To some extent, it’s the league’s ideal. However, witnessing this year’s four division leaders in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Aspects of each franchise suggest title potential, though not comprehensively. Indianapolis Outlook

Starting in Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn’t quite reached complete disaster level. Yet the past two games have raised concerns. He’s back to turning over the ball and struggling against pressure. He was sacked seven times facing Atlanta on Sunday, and experienced a short sequence during which he tossed a pick and fumbled three times. This follows he gave away possessions five separate times facing the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense excelled during early games since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers make the Colts capable of overcoming periodic mistakes, like their German performance. However, if Jones reverts to his historically mistake-heavy play would finish championship hopes.

New England Patriots

New England appears relatively comparable. A year ago, they were a punchline. Currently, they represent football's most unexpected success and the strongest squad across the league following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for fumbling away a contest they should have won versus the Steelers, they'd possess at 9–1 with the best record. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Today they appear youthful, quick and confident. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've played against the most manageable schedule throughout football, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has taken sacks on 35 occasions – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he endured during the game appeared dangerous. Over time, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are eight wins similarly, and the perception remains like they're nervously waiting. Their quarterback has been erratic, and the offense plodding, as the defense handles most of the responsibility. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos aren’t scaring any playoff team. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West at 7-2, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges to mount a deep postseason tilt.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, somehow still leading the AFC North notwithstanding receiving a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase persistently appear. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, however, the Ravens, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have pulled the gap to just one game, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record yet still appear capable of division victory is telling about the entire AFC.

Established Contenders

The Ravens represent a segment of the Big Three – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, who could still create the most fear for opponents should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo continue to self-destruct.

Buffalo Bills

Previously, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. During Sunday's action they experienced a particularly discouraging setback during the campaign. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they suffered humiliation, falling 30-13 on the road. This represented Miami's initial victory against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
