Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has revealed that he will decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any determination is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
Newsom has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and championing a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he declared, following a this week's fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in loss of life and injured individuals.
Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to secure a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was withholding $40m from California for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team said in a last month's release addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recent survey showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
