Tune into plenty of self-improvement experts, and you'll be easy to believe that dozing is a secret weapon: rather than a band-aid following restless night, but a path to improved recall, better spirits and perhaps a faster 5k run time. Premier League footballers are all at it – and so are musicians, fighters & media moguls. But if you haven’t got a dedicated nap-room or a job that allows daytime sleep, can there *honestly* enough benefits to a short sleep to justify the effort? Is there a dependable method to nod off promptly? Furthermore, can you truly ensure you’ll wake up feeling better, instead of groggy?
Identifying The Reasons for Napping
“There are three main reasons for daytime sleep in the adult population,” explains an expert sleep and circadian science professor. “The first is termed compensatory napping, which is what you do following poor sleep overnight. Secondly, there's prophylactic napping, where you are anticipating sleep loss coming up, such as during overnight shifts. Finally, there's “appetitive drive”, which simply boils down to the wish: you get an opportunity to doze in the daytime, and it feels nice to nap.”
The first thing to do, then, is to examine your reason for napping. “Naps can be truly beneficial when overnight rest is being disrupted due to causes outside your control – for instance, for a parent of a newborn, or you’re recovering from sickness or intense exercise,” explains a sleep specialist. “Yet when you take a nap since your night sleep seems unreliable or unreliable, that can be a sign your body's sleep pressure is not as strong as required. In such situations, daytime sleep can turn into part of the problem, rather than the answer. Employ naps as a short-term solution for temporary issues – the priority must always be a strong and predictable night’s sleep.”
The Perfect Nap Length
Therefore that daytime sleep shouldn’t be sufficiently lengthy to disrupt your nighttime sleep, and best are not recommended after about 3pm (contingent on when you retire in the evening). What duration is wise? Guidelines are mixed. From the most-cited studies about napping, experts noted that space travelers showed improvements of over 50% in attentiveness plus a 34% rise in performance post a 26-minute snooze (to be precise, this counted a six-minute sleep onset time). “I recommend using an alarm for half an hour or less – many individuals doze off quickly,” says a specialist. “There is plenty of guidance out there regarding the perfect length for sleeping, but that tends to cause people to feel more anxious than anything else – and the worst thing you can do when trying to fall asleep is to stress over it.”
Should you decide to nap for a longer period, avoid the 45-60 minute window that induces sleep grogginess, that spaced-out feeling when you awaken. “Studies would say it's more effective to have a longer nap of 60 to 90 minutes compared to a medium-length nap,” notes the professor. “Forty-five minutes is sufficient to put you into a deep sleep stage and it is more probable to feel disoriented when you get up – whereas if you take it a little longer to an hour or 90 minutes, you’re likely to finish a natural sleep cycle and should get up feeling more alert. Though if you nap for an hour and a half, it will affect the quality of your sleep in the evening.”
Establishing the Perfect Nap Environment
When it comes to exact methodologies, suggestions are diverse. Some experts suggest adopting comparable habits you’d use to promote quality nighttime sleep: a peaceful area, a supportive surface and as much darkness as is feasible. Some advise that you should simply nap in a chair with ambient lighting is available – both to discourage sleep inertia and to “protect” your bed as the place you associate with nighttime rest. “Sleep is quite challenging to will,” notes an expert. “Without any sleepiness, it is more challenging to recline and basically tell yourself to nod off. There’s got to be a natural inclination there to bring the sleep on initially. I can usually take a nap in full light and wake up naturally without an alarm, however, what assists a lot of people is to wait for an instance that they’re naturally slightly tired and just gently relax into it.”
Trying different approaches is valuable, and should you have few options – for example, if you’re trying to squeeze in a quick nap while traveling or in a soundproof office pod – it is perfectly fine to use some accessories. “In my work with elite athletes, I suggest that they not rely on sleeping in their bed, as they’re going to have|they will
