Why 'Showgirl' Emerged as the Dazzling Style of This Year

Following a long-running run on the Las Vegas strip, the performers from the production Jubilee! executed their last synchronised kick in 2016. The extravaganza, renowned for its elaborate costumes crafted by style icon Bob Mackie, came to an end due to dwindling audience numbers and disappointed commentators who described it as a spectacle “stuck in the past”.

Today, roughly eight years later, the showgirl persona, or at least the glamorous showgirl look, is making a comeback.

The King of Sequins

Known as the “sultan of sequins”, Mackie has made theatrical stage sparkle his signature style, clothing everyone from Hollywood icons to Madonna. Earlier this month, a “see-through” bodysuit he created for Cher in 1978 fetched $57,600, far exceeding its projected value, while a metallic fringed bodysuit with shiny wings that Mackie crafted for Tina Turner for a 1977 concert sold for $19,200.

“I believe it looks more attractive for the emerging artists who is seeking something other than what they were accustomed to”, he explained to a publication. “Today's artists are striving for a show-stopping, more dramatic, breathtaking, memorable statement.”

A Musical Revival

It’s a look that made its way all the way to the centre of mainstream fashion in 2025 thanks to a chart-topping superstar. In the past few months, the cultural juggernaut wore one of Mackie’s classic Jubilee! costumes on the cover of her new musical project. The crystal-covered bra and thong, plumed armbands and shimmering headpiece were ideal for a record titled The Life of a Showgirl.

She is part of a trend. This year, showgirl references have been adopted by music artists including Miley Cyrus as they whizzed across world tours in glitter, revealing designs and plumes, illuminated against theatrical sets. A top stylist a fashion expert told a fashion magazine he wanted to bring “a stage persona” to her Radical Optimism tour – drawing from pictures from the 1950s, Lipa’s dancers waved giant ostrich feather fans.

Pulling from Tradition

Lipa, Carpenter and other successful musicians also take inspiration from historical entertainment forms, including classic theater and ensemble references. The results are worlds away from the 1990s era pop style of revealing tops and utilitarian trousers, and urban dance moves that came before them.

But not everyone are on board with this showgirl revival. An ex-showgirl, a ex- Jubilee! showgirl who danced in the 2000s says the trend is “puzzling”. She thinks the word term is being “used as an umbrella term covering everything from The Radio City Rockettes to Broadway performers and now apparently today's icons.”

The Highly Sought-After Vintage Look

For younger and young adult stars, Mackie’s retro designs have become incredibly sought-after. In 2024, a famous actress gave a nod to one of Mackie’s earliest clients, Cher, when the actor wore a semi-sheer sequined dress made by the designer in 2001, which was similar to one he designed for Cher to wear in 1967. Months after, another pop star paid an private amount to buy the Mackie fringed mini dress she had worn earlier in the year to perform at the Grammys. In September, Sabrina Carpenter wore a series of vintage Mackie designs at the MTV Video Music Awards. They are also a hit among vintage enthusiasts.

“The showgirl aesthetic evoke a sense of longing for a historical elegance,” says Su Kim Chung, head of special collections at the an academic institution, who researches the history of showgirls. “Now it is seen as a sort of ‘toned-down’ allure because it has been modified. It has got all the elegance, the sparkles and the glitter but without the nudity.”

A Than Just Fashion: An Symbol of Las Vegas

Chung says the showgirl image are key to the identity of Vegas. She points to former mayor Oscar Goodman who, during public appearances, was surrounded by two showgirls. Even though Las Vegas no longer has any showgirl-centric productions, Chung says they are still employed as an logo of the city, showing up at conventions and in promotional material. “The showgirl is still a enduring icon of Vegas spectacle,” the expert says.

The Appeal of Escape

Hardy says the transformative effect of a stage character is part of the attraction. It’s something the singer references in a new behind-the-scenes film that documents the backstage action from her massive 2023 Eras tour, which included intense rehearsals, gym sessions and numerous shows across multiple nations, each going on for 3.5 hours.

Hardy explains her own showgirl performances as “like running a marathon in high heels every night”. Her headpiece was 34lbs. “I had to carry it all the way up the staircase to the stage from the backstage area three floors below in the lower level. I had to start early for my entrance so I could catch my breath before I made my entrance. One is sweating the whole time but crafting this illusion that it’s simple and stunning and dreamlike.”

Maybe this is where the fascination of the showgirl really lies. In the chaos of 2025 there is a desire for a break from reality. Is there anyone better to look to than showgirls, who have always represented make-believe, idealism and a realm where no one misses a mark.
